Berkeley Fees and Budget
The Fall Program for Freshmen is a self-supporting program. In addition to the UC Berkeley tuition and fees that all Cal undergrads pay (see Cost of Attendance), FPF students are assessed an additional $2,050 program fee to support this unique experience, including costs associated with smaller class sizes, increased access to one-on-one advising, and access to special workshops and events held exclusively for FPF students. You will only be assessed the $2,050 program fee for the fall term. Please note that the program fee is subject to change for Fall 2018.
Cost of Attendance
Cost-of-attendance estimates are produced by the UC Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships office in order to assist students in planning their finances for the upcoming school year. You can refer to the Financial Aid and Scholarships website for up-to-date tuition costs and fee estimates, but note that as an FPF student, you should be planning for the following in your total cost-of-attendance calculations:
- FPF Program Fee ($2050)
- Tuition and Fees
- Room and Board
- Health Insurance (SHIP or equivalent)
- Other Estimated Costs
- Textbooks and Course Materials
- Costs of optional class excursions
- Food (outside of meal plan)
- Housing and Utilities
- Personal Expenses
Note: Actual tuition, fees and charges are subject to change by the Regents of the University of California and could be affected by increases or reductions in State funding or other developments.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial Aid is available to students who qualify and is administered by the UC Berkeley Financial Aid Office. Title IV financial aid is available if you qualify. You may apply financial aid, scholarships and educational loans to the FPF fees. Your financial aid package will reflect awards for both the fall and spring semesters. In some cases, full financial need is not met. Please contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office regarding your specific Financial Aid award amount and detail. In general, you must maintain a minimum load of 12 units to receive financial aid. Remember, the minimum full-time course load at FPF is 13 units.
The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office provides information for undergraduates, graduates and parents regarding all things finance, such as when and how aid pays, cost of attendance, applying for aid, types of aid, maintaining eligibility, adjustments to your offer, students with dependents and much more. It also provides links to important forms; directs you to outside related resources; and grants access to MyFinAid, your personal Berkeley financial profile.
Many FPF students also apply for work-study positions on campus if their package allows it.
If you receive a scholarship from an outside organization and would like to apply that money toward the FPF fee, mail your scholarship check, payable to UC Regents and marked with your name and student ID number, to:

Please do not send scholarship checks directly to FPF.
Scholarship Connection: UC Berkeley's clearinghouse for information on scholarships that are funded by sources outside of the University. Scholarship Connection is run by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Prestigious Scholarships (OUR). It receives hundreds of scholarship notices each year.
FPF is only approved by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to offer educational benefits if you are eligible for Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31). FPF is not approved to offer educational benefits for other VA Chapters, including Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) or Veteran Dependents (Chapter 35).
Under California law and the University of California policy, the Cal Vet tuition exemption applies only to certain charges assessed to you in state-supported programs. Because FPF is not subsidized by the state, the Cal Vet tuition exemption cannot be applied to the FPF program fee or tuition for an FPF student in the fall semester. Questions? If you qualify for financial aid through FAFSA, once you register for FPF, you will need to adjust your financial aid package to reflect the additional FPF fee.
- Log in to Cal Central and click on “My Finances.”
- In the Financial Aid & Scholarships section on the left, you can click the “Update” link next to the Housing section and choose “FPF-Campus” to show your financial aid package if you choose to enroll in FPF and live on campus.
- If you choose FPF and prefer to live off campus or to commute, you should contact Financial Aid and Scholarships directly to recalculate your package.
