Reading and Composition (R&C) Requirement

L&S students should fulfill the R&C requirement in their freshman year or, at the latest, by the end of their sophomore year. Therefore, most students start or complete this requirement in FPF. The level of R&C you take is determined by whether you have already fulfilled the University Entry Level Writing Requirement and by your AP or IB English scores. You must fulfill both the University Entry Level Writing Requirement and the R&C requirement.

If you have already fulfilled the R&C requirement with AP or college credit, you are not required to select an R&C course for the fall. Review this information to determine whether you have already fulfilled the R&C requirement: L&S R&C requirement.

University Entry Level Writing Requirement

All University of California students must fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement. Many FPF students meet this requirement with AP credit or exam scores. If you have not fulfilled this requirement, you will be enrolled in College Writing R1A. This course satisfies both the Entry Level Writing Requirement and the first half (R1A) of the L&S Reading and Composition requirement. Students who place into College Writing R1A may only enroll in two additional FPF courses.

To determine whether you have already fulfilled this requirement, read more about Entry Level Writing.

Selecting an R&C Course

FPF places you in an R&C course based on your writing-related exam scores and/or college coursework. Your course selections only indicate your subject and schedule preferences. You will choose between English and Rhetoric and between a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule. FPF considers your preferences, exam results and college transcripts and enrolls you into the appropriate R&C level. If you have already fulfilled both semesters of R&C, FPF will enroll you in one of your backup breadth courses instead. If FPF requires additional results or transcripts, you will be contacted during the summer. Check your bMail account frequently.

Note: Students who place into College Writing R1A may only enroll in two additional FPF courses.
